Fruit Basket A Gay Man Journey eBook Payam Ghassemlou Reviews
This is a wonderful soulful journey of growth and awakening of a young man who comes to know his true self. As this happens he is better able to love and care for himself, which opens his life up to find a life partner. Dr. Ghassemlou has described Javid's psychological and spiritual growth through dynamic, clear and beautiful words. I look forward to reading more work from this gifted author.
Fruit Basket is a short fictionalized semi-autobiographical novel about growing up gay. The main character, like the author who is a psychologist in private practice in West Hollywood, is Iranian. This slightly skews the universality of Ghassemlou's developmental stages, but only slightly. The narrator seems to be a therapist/mentor who stays in contact, mostly through email, with a young gay man named Javid over a p[eriod of some twenty years. The story is the account of Javid's going through a series of life stages--from fearful youth to out and sexually active gay man and bar bunny to questioning young adult seeking a purpose in life and engaging in a kind of Jungian internal dialogue with self to political activist to adult in relationship learning love and overcoming shame, including racial shame, to spiritual seeker finding spiritual meaning within his sexuality and then beginning to work with environmental causes to improve the world. This IS the basic developmental model for gay men's lives. It's the Hero Journey. The details vary, of course, from person to person, but the pattern is there.
Because it is presented as a novel, Fruit Basket is an easy introduction to the idea that gay men's lives go through progressive stages. This isn't exactly new information, both academic and pop psychology feature developmental stage models. But by telling about the stages in a specific individual's life, Ghassemlou dramatizes the psychology lesson and makes it real. It IS important that we have developmental models; they set up expectations, they help us cope with the inevitable changes that are going to happen in life by showing how normal and natural it is to grow and adapt and broaden one's consciousness, like a river flows to the sea. The book ends with a lovely little poem about how to live like a river flowing, unattached, into the Divine ocean of love. What a nice developmental expectation that is!
